If you have seen Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah – or even just snippets of it – you may understand why Buki describes it as a "teachable moment."

Buki is interviewed by Sony award-winning presenter Miranda Rae to discuss institutional bias and how to overcome it after his recent LinkedIn analysis of the bias implications of Oprah’s interview.

He explains that unconscious bias results from individuals having negative views or ideologies toward specific groups or minorities because of societal conditioning. During the interview, Buki highlights examples of unconscious bias that you may find interesting.

For instance, you may be familiar with this example: women may be dismissed as being incapable of undertaking certain roles because of unconscious bias. This thinking develops over time because of the media or messages received from friends, family, and society.

"I Don’t Understand?" is the title of Buki’s upcoming book and his method to overcome unconscious bias. The title reflects the fact those in opposition often cannot understand the perspective of others, which can be both frustrating and surprising.

Buki’s method provides practical solutions for you if you are dealing with co-workers, colleagues, or friends who present unconsciously bias opinions or views. During the interview, the conversation between Oprah, Harry, and Meghan is discussed.

Buki states that the way the conversation was framed within public spaces was frustrating as there is a crucial difference between offensive and racist statements and anxiety. In addition, he states there is a great deal of hypocrisy surrounding the mass media and its treatment of Meghan.

A representative said: “Buki throws out of the window much of the accepted wisdom around unconscious bias training targeted at minorities. He rejects the guilty perpetrator-versus-hapless victim model embraced by most corporates, which he sees as counterproductive.”
