Life Chiropractic College West Diversity Committee Makes The Practice Inclusive

Jun 7, 2023

Life Chiropractic College West, a leading chiropractic medicine and education center in California, is taking active steps to make the holistic healthcare practice a more diverse one.

Jimmy Nanda, the chairman of the board of regents at Life Chiropractic College West, is proud to announce that he has created a new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, which he hopes will prompt a nationwide transformation of the profession.

The role of Life Chiropractic College West’s new strategic initiative is to make the college’s campus culture more inclusive, to develop a culture of service, to create greater community engagement, and to train staff in diversity practices. Jimmy Nanda is the first person of South Asian descent to chair a chiropractic board at such a high level in the US, and, with the establishment of his new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, he hopes to make chiropractic medicine and education a more accessible field. If you are a person of color in America who has felt alienated from the practice in some way, Jimmy Nanda is here to welcome you.

Life Chiropractic College West has long been a leader in chiropractic medicine and education in California and across the country. However, they have observed that the field—which they believe to be a vital contributor to health and wellness in the country—lacks diversity at a structural level. As a recent exposé by Johanna Tatlow for Medium described, the profession is “glaringly white”, with 97% of chiropractic patients in the US being white, and 85% of chiropractic practitioners being white.

Jimmy Nanda and Life Chiropractic College West believe this is an unignorable disparity, which shows that chiropractic medicine must act and must make deliberate strides towards diversity. Life West wants you to know that this is what they are seeking to achieve with their new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee.

The board of regents under Jimmy Nanda has spearheaded several significant changes to the operation of Life Chiropractic College West in order to achieve the aims of the new committee. These include increasing awareness of the importance and value of diversity, inclusion and equity at all levels of the college, providing diversity and inclusion training and development to all college staff and leaders, and engaging both current students and alumni in the call to make the college more diverse. Life West is now also recognizing and rewarding efforts in the field of diversity, and implementing metrics and accountability standards and systems to ensure the college achieves its goals; and they want you to be a part of the nationwide community that holds them accountable.

Life Chiropractic College West believes that the appointment of Jimmy Nanda as the head of the board of regents stands as a symbol of the future and sends you a clear message that the college values diversity, not only in words, but in action.

Silvia Dueñas Bielser, the board-appointed Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator and Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair, said, “Diversity, inclusion and equity are integral to the Life West mission to focus our collective efforts on creating a campus community where students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and life experiences can contribute and thrive for the betterment of humanity.”

Whether you are a practicing chiropractor, a potential future student, or an industry commentator, Life Chiropractic College West is proud to be at the front of a new chapter for chiropractic care in America, and they hope you will join them.
