All of us are now tired of staying indoors. We all want life to go back to normal. That may seem impossible with the hundreds of new cases and tens of COVID-related deaths that the country records every day. Luckily, the ongoing COVID-19 vaccinations are bringing some hope. The government is now gradually easing some of the COVID-19 restriction measures.

The Gradual Opening of Daycares in Australia

To safely open up the country again and avoid surging rates of COVID infections, the government ordered workplaces not to allow workers to undertake work at their respective places of work, not unless the worker or the workplace is an authorized provider of essential services. The government, therefore, requires employers that need their staff to attend their worksite site to issue their workers with a work permit.

Childcare, kindergarten, and early education centers are only accepting children whose parents have a work permit. Children whose parents don't have a work permit from their employer are not welcome in schools and childcare centers.

Children and COVID-19

Though children are at lower risk of COVID-19 than adults, it is good to note that children and infants can be infected with the SARS-COV-2 virus, get sick, and spread it. Children infected with COVID-19 show mild symptoms, and some don't develop any symptoms at all.

According to the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization, the symptoms of COVID in most children are similar to those of strep throat, colds, influenza, and other common illnesses. And just like adults, infected children that are not showing any symptom can still spread the virus to other people. Children with underlying health conditions like diabetes are at a higher risk of developing a severe illness after infection. However, according to data from all over the world, only one-third of hospitalized children are admitted to ICU.

How Childcare Centres are Managing the Pandemic

Children in a childcare setting can be infected with COVID-19 and spread the virus to other children and staff in the program, parents at home, and the community. That means that taking children to childcare centers and schools can increase the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 in older people and those living with underlying medical conditions.

The fact that children can spread the virus even when they are not showing any symptoms does not mean that parents with work permits should avoid enrolling their children in daycare programs. Childcare programs can support children's mental health and social skills, and pre-school foster early learning development. Childcare and pre-school programs also give young parents a chance to return to work and earn a living.

What Lollipop Lane is Doing to Keep Children Safe

Not all childcare centers in Queensland are open. Lollipop Lane Childcare is one of the few that are still operational during these difficult times. However, for children to be welcome, their parents must present a work permit.

Lollipop Lane Kindergarten and Early Education Centre is doing its best to keep all children and staff safe from COVID-19. All staff are trained on how to lower the risk of COVID-19 spread. Our staff are also fully vaccinated and always wearing our masks. We are also tested for COVID-19 regularly and encouraged not to report to work when we are feeling unwell.

Teaching children how to put on a mask is not an easy task for many parents. The staff here are professionals in dealing with children, and we know what we need to do to reinforce good behavior, including regular washing of hands and wearing masks when in public.

Lollipop Lane Childcare has also increased the frequency of routine cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces. Apart from cleaning, the center is not accepting children that are showing symptoms of COVID-19.
