Save Sea Turtles To Stop Jellyfish Overgrowth & Preserve Ocean Biodiversity

Apr 27, 2024

Sea turtles play a vital role in maintaining the health of our oceans but, sadly, they are critically endangered. Find out why, and what you can do to help, with Ever Wonder Adventure.

We all know that plastic pollution is bad, but have you ever stopped to consider the effect on our ocean as a whole? Plastic can be easily mistaken by marine life as food, leading to starvation and even death. Sea turtles are critical to the biodiversity of our oceans, and without them, the world would be a very different place.

Polluted by Plastic

According to recent data from UNESCO Ocean Literacy, approximately 8-10 million metric tons of plastic make its way into the ocean each year. This makes up 80% of all marine pollution and is incredibly detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. Ever Wonder Adventure raises awareness of the current threat to sea turtles and the devastating consequences that would occur if this vital species were to become extinct.

So why are sea turtles important?

Ever Wonder Adventure explains the critical role sea turtles play in maintaining the balance of our marine ecosystems. Without them, the population of other species, such as jellyfish, would overgrow, leading to an imbalanced ecosystem and a sharp decline in other marine species, such as fish.

Similarly, if jellyfish were to grow out of control, they could completely decimate seagrass beds - home to many marine organisms, including fish and crustaceans. Ever Wonder Adventure explains how a sharp drop in seagrass would further disrupt the balance of marine species, potentially leading to the collapse of human-led fisheries.

But not only that... sea turtles are also responsible for transporting vital nutrients to sand dunes when nesting eggs. “This process helps shape beach ecosystems by redistributing sand and allowing for the growth of vegetation,” explains Ever Wonder Adventure.

In addition to improving dune ecosystems, sea turtles transport nutrients when migrating through the ocean. When feeding and discarding fragments, nutrients are distributed vast distances across the ocean floor, stimulating the growth of phytoplankton. This is eaten by primary consumers, helping to maintain the balance of the entire marine food chain.

Catastrophic Consequences

“If sea turtles were to be made extinct due to the reckless disposal of plastic waste into the sea, the consequences for marine ecology would be catastrophic,” warns Ever Wonder Adventure. You can contribute to their campaign to save sea turtles by purchasing any of their branded merchandise, including t-shirts, sweatshirts and mugs. By rocking your new t-shirt, you can help to raise awareness and strengthen the organization's campaign to safeguard the world’s marine ecosystem.
