Greenwood Crate and Box Company, a Wooden Goods Manufacturer primarily serving Vancouver and the Lower Mainland (often called "GCBC"), has today been recognized as being a front runner in the realm of custom-branded wooden crates and boxes that can be used for packaging and displays in breweries, wineries, liquor stores, restaurants, and more. I think the news coincides nicely with Greenwood Crate and Box Company's recent recognition as a community favourite, which seems to be due to it's way of using the company brand to bring attention to Canada's smallest city: Greenwood, British Columbia— where the GCBC wood shop is located.
In the community, the GCBC team often uses their company as a platform to promote the positive social and environmental effects of supporting local. Plastic-alternatives are an important topic right now, and with British Columbia being home to one of the world’s most sustainable forest sectors, I am impressed with their ability to offer reusable, plastic-free products.
Greenwood Crate and Box Co. has been operating in the retail display market for just over a year and competes against notable businesses such as Woodpak Industries Inc. and ULINE Canada. They have been able to make such a strong impression on the market and gain reputation by handcrafting all their products with local, high-quality British Columbia lumber, while still maintaining a great price in relation to larger manufacturers.
Sage Hughes, Greenwood Crate and Box Company's Head of Marketing spoke about its recent recognition, expanding on some of the decisions and motivations that led the business to the level it's currently reached.
"When GCBC was founded, it was made abundantly clear we wanted to be the kind of company that was known for putting real value into the world, and helping Canadian businesses thrive. One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting our name out at the start of the pandemic, which was incredibly hard as we were just starting up. Not only were sales stunted by the larger economic impact of COVID-19, but specifically breweries, wineries, and dining establishments were hit pretty hard— that alone completely changed how sales were being conducted."
With Greenwood Crate and Box Co. starting during lockdowns and an unpredictable economic climate, the team says they still managed to get back on their feet with creative solutions.
"Fortunately with some good people behind us and complete confidence in the versatility of our products, we found a way to work with clients to help them shift to more reusable, plastic alternatives and market their own businesses. By offering custom branding on crates so business owners could increase their brand exposure, we were able to overcome every obstacle and really hit our stride."
Sage Hughes also mentioned Greenwood Crate and Box Company's future plans involve increasing the variety in their product collection, starting with dog beds and standing desks, in addition to promoting more custom branding for products. It's the hope of the company that long-lasting, locally made crates and boxes will be able to serve their customers to a level beyond any of the competition, and do so in a more sustainable manner.
Greenwood Crate and Box Company plans to maintain its position at the forefront of durable, custom-branded wood products that can be used for breweries, wineries, liquor stores, restaurants, and other retailers for years to come, building on its success, finding new ways to serve its community, customers and the world at large.
