Evidence-Based Behavioral Programs To Improve Emotional Wellness In BIPOC Youth

Oct 9, 2023

For solutions to social disparity and accessible systems of care that give struggling, disadvantaged families an equal chance to get the healthcare they need, look no further than curaJOY’s digital programs, which are powered and supported by the AWS Health Equity Initiative.

The social determinants of health can chart the course of a child’s life, and it goes without saying that a child without access to the necessary resources will face more struggles than their peers. This inequity eventually adds to the social disparities ingrained in our society for many years, fueling a never-ending cycle.

While there’s no silver bullet, advancements in technology can help bridge the gap, and that’s precisely what curaJOY aims to do with its programs. Using certain digital advancements, such as innovative conversational AI, curaJOY’s goal is to make healthcare more accessible to oft-overlooked marginalized groups, such as children from rural communities and BIPOC youth, and give them the chance to get psychoeducational assessments, whole-family therapy, and other forms of social support, should they need it.

After all, if everyone got the help they needed when they needed it, the world would be a much better place.

Did you know? As much as 50% of mental illnesses appear in children before the age of 14, but these often go unnoticed or undiagnosed due to a lack of awareness.

But that’s not all. Additional studies from UNICEF show that there are around 240 million children living with disabilities worldwide, with over half of them currently not receiving any education; this number jumps to a staggering 90% in developing countries.

Here’s another factoid: over 50% of children with emotional, behavioral, or mental health disorders drop out of school, and these kids are 800% more likely to be incarcerated in their lifetime.

On the other hand, socioemotional education results in an 11% increase in academic performance. Basically, everything is connected.

curaJOY acknowledges that mitigating the social determinants of health is an essential first step in addressing the inequities that bar marginalized communities from accessing healthcare. Low-income families, members of certain racial groups, and LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to encounter difficulties while receiving treatment, something that can perpetuate generational trauma and exacerbate mental illnesses.

As such, the areas of research in curaJOY’s current project include decreasing the wait time for behavior interventions, heightening the accuracy of machine learning to aid clinicians with functional behavior analysis, user engagement in hybrid in-app and real-world gamification models, and the correlation between behaviors, mood, and medication use.

With digital initiatives, such as their MyCuraJOY behavioral health app, curaJOY aims to create an integrated system of care that is accessible to marginalized communities, with the long-term goals of diagnosing learning differences early, reducing crime, unemployment, and substance abuse, increasing high school graduation rates and physical health, and alleviating the strain caused by a critical shortage of mental healthcare workers.

Additionally, MyCuraJOY is the first behavioral health care app to be available in Chinese, which will fill a huge void in the market; it’s the very definition of accessible. The program will also help users streamline the completion of IDEA-mandated and insurance-funded health benefits while minimizing costs and errors.

curaJOY’s current project reflects its devotion to improving the lives of families around the world, regardless of their background. For its multi-faceted approach that presents cloud-based solutions to social disparities, curaJOY has qualified for the AWS Health Equity Initiative and will be receiving substantial financial support for its programs.

It’s not hard to see why they’re being backed by AWS. For an issue as complex as this, it’s definitely difficult to find a one-size-fits-all solution. But curaJOY’s initiatives address a lot of the root causes surrounding social inequity, so in terms of the accessibility problems many marginalized families face when they’re trying to get healthcare, the organization is well on its way to solving this crisis.

But there can never be enough hands on deck, especially when it comes to delivering accessible care to all corners of the world. Together, we can all change the world, one step at a time.
