Dr. Carrie Lam, MD, a recent winner of a Medical Scholarship Award for Preventive Medicine, recently completed a relief mission trip to the Seventh-day Adventist Clinic in Tamuning, Guam, where she offered her expertise in primary care, as well as functional and integrative medicine.

Lam's goal during her mission was to empower the people there to find safe and natural approaches to recovery and well-being.

"It's a very rewarding experience working with everyone there," said Lam about her recent mission. "We really get a sense of making a difference."

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Clinic on Guam was established in 1956. Relief providers visit the clinic throughout the year to offer much-needed specialty services.

As part of the Dr. Lam Coaching staff in Loma Linda, Lam has been trained in whole-person care that takes into account a person’s body, mind, and spirit. Her emphasis is on nutrition, adrenal fatigue recovery, anti-aging, and lifestyle medicine.

Guam, a tiny Micronesian island in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, is an American territory with a long history. It was first inhabited by the Chamorros people over 4,000 years ago, and it has been occupied and governed by different forces since.

Since its inception here, the SDA Guam clinic has expanded in size and scope, offering dental services, vision services, physical therapy, and wellness programs, as well as radiology, pharmacy, and laboratory services. The clinic currently has five full-time family practice doctors, an urgent care physician, an endocrinologist, an infection disease provider, an OB-GYN physician, and a certified nurse midwife. A general surgeon, an orthopedic surgeon, and a pediatric cardiologist are employed there part-time, and four full-time physician assistants are also on staff.

Even with all that, the efforts of physicians like Lam and other caregivers as part of relief missions provide much-needed help to the clinic.

Along with the other physicians and health professionals at Dr. Lam Coaching — whose combined experience exceeds a half-century — Lam's passion is to help people heal naturally.

Lam graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts from Pacific Union College, California, and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Loma Linda University, California.
