Perkins decided to publish on LIFE: Rants, Tributes and Lessons Learned in No Particular Order as a response to friends and family constantly asking him for physical copies of his written work. He also wanted to leave behind something for his son, Austin, with whom he has a close relationship.
However, gathering all the pieces included in the book proved a difficult task. By his own admission, Perkins had not been a good steward of his work, and as a result, some of the pieces his friends and family had requested he couldn't locate. Nevertheless, he plowed on and managed to assemble the pieces he could find into a short but powerful book.
“I tried to gather as much material as I could, which turned out to be harder than I imagined, given decades of computer updates and software changes,” explained Perkins. “But I had also promised my son that I would try to leave the paper trail that I wish I had had from my own father. With this book, I have pieced together at least a short trail for him.”
Most of the stories in on LIFE: Rants, Tributes and Lessons Learned in No Particular Order are infused with Perkins’s trademark humor and satire. Throughout the book, he also takes up several different controversial and contrarian stances. While he doesn’t expect all readers to agree with his viewpoints, he does hope that they will at the least reevaluate their opinions and beliefs.
