Dementia is not an easy experience for individuals or their loved ones. However, at The Village at Sugar Land, the resident care team endeavors to create an environment where living with a memory-related illness can be as positive as possible.

Through their Rivers Care Unit, they try to create a warm and nurturing environment where your loved one can thrive and live happily. Modeled after the acclaimed Montessori Method, the facility offers residents with memory-related challenges an environment where they can engage in activities that evoke positive emotions.

According to the Center for Disease Control, around 6 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. By 2060, they predict that this number could triple. This makes it critically important that assisted living and memory care facilities are in place to deal with this growth. The Village at Sugar Land’s Rivers Care Unit is one facility trying to take on some of that responsibility.

The Rivers Care Unit is a live-in section of The Village at Sugar Land dedicated to residents with memory-related illnesses. In this unit, your loved one is encouraged to participate in activities designed to evoke positive emotions and coax out long-term memories. While this is happening, the unit’s trained staff is on hand to provide round-the-clock support and care as needed.

In terms of care, the Rivers Care Unit has staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The facility also provides in-house medical appointments, as well as fitness and rehabilitation services. In addition to care, the staff performs frequent safety checks (every 30 minutes) and the suites are fitted with protective measures so your loved one doesn't accidentally harm themselves.

Regarding activities, your loved one gets to choose which ones they participate in each day from a list of several different options. Some popular activities include crafts, exercise, outdoor experiences, and puzzles and games. Many residents also help prep the foods that are served in the dining rooms. Should your loved one want to do an activity that isn’t offered, The Village at Sugar Land staff is open to accommodating requests.

The unit also hosts monthly family events where you can come and spend the day with your loved one and participate in activities with them. If you're wanting to learn more about dementia and other memory-related illnesses, the unit also provides access to educational programs and ongoing support groups.

The Rivers Care Unit offers two floorplans for its residents. The Private Suites, which have a bathroom, bedroom, and small living area, are ideal for residents who want a more independent experience. Meanwhile, the Shared Suites, which have an additional bedroom, are more suited for residents wanting human interaction and comfort.

“Our Rivers Care Unit takes a different approach to memory care,” said a spokesperson for the facility. “Inspired by the Montessori Method, we focus on what residents can do, not what they can’t do. Our goal is to provide them with a supportive environment where they’re involved, independent, and living life to its fullest.”
