Short-Term Rentals For Professionals Help Detroit’s Revitalization, Experts Say

Mar 6, 2025

As the City of Detroit continues its remarkable revitalization, real estate experts discuss the importance of short-term rentals in facilitating the arrival of business professionals, airline personnel and key workers like travel nurses.

Following decades of falling prices, rising crime and an exodus from both the city’s suburbs and urban center, which culminated with the City of Detroit filing for bankruptcy—the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in America’s history—which led prominent news institutions to state that the city had ‘collapsed’, Detroit is now experiencing a significant period of revitalization.

In the years since this collapse, both local and national governmental efforts have sought to rebuild the city, and as the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) recently reported, due to significant funding initiatives and reinvestment, the city has begun to make significant traction as both a destination for businesses and startups, for national and international tourism, and for cultural events.

Following years of investment from the government-backed MEDC and the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF), experts believe that private corporations can now play a significant role in furthering this revitalization and reinvigorating the city’s business, tourism and arts scenes.

One such company is Detroit Furnished Rentals, who believes that high-quality, carefully selected short-term rentals can help facilitate the influx of business professionals and other seasonal workers who need to live and work in the city on a short-term basis.

Accordingly, the real estate company has carefully pinpointed urban and industrial sites in need of restoration, rejuvenation and an injection of private capital. Since their founding in 2022, they have developed a small but significant portfolio of sites in areas which were previously unoccupied and which are, presently, less desired by long-term tenants and buyers.

Typically targeting formerly historical properties which are currently in a state of disrepair, their restorations also seek to preserve the architectural charm of the city and protect original design features and materials.

Sean Swain, the Owner and Founder of Detroit Furnished Rentals, said, “The revitalization of Detroit excites us, offering the perfect backdrop to showcase the city’s unique offerings. Situated on an international border, Detroit boasts a rich French heritage akin to New Orleans. Its stunning architecture, spanning various periods of American history, provides a rich foundation that we are thrilled to present to the world.”
