Go big—or go back to the ’90s. Here are the top eyewear trends for 2024

Feb 23, 2024

Are bug-eyed sunglasses coming back? Yes and no—big, bold, and bright is definitely the way to go in 2024.

Last year, the tiny '90s frames did indeed ‘come back stronger than a '90s trend’—but trends change.

In 2024, designers are saying goodbye to the tiny '90s frames—which anyone who lived through the '90s will be thankful for—and are instead embracing big, bold, bright designs that are sure to take any outfit from drab to glam.

London's luxury eyewear retailers Maverick & Wolf have seen that when it comes to luxury eyewear, 2024 is all about ‘go big or go home’—with oversized frames, bold designs, and tinted sunglasses cited as the top eyewear trends of 2024.

While the '90s may be on their way out, fashion is still cyclical, and Maverick & Wolf believes 2024 will see a resurgence of other once-popular designs.

Oversized Sunglasses: The New (Old) Glam Girl Must-Have

From J Lo's dark-tinted oversized sunglasses to Beyoncé's statement shades she wore throughout the Renaissance Tour, the message is clear: oversized sunglasses are back—and they're cool again. A trend that dates back to the '60s and '70s, oversized glasses have made a few comebacks over the decades—with their most recent surge in popularity happening in the early aughts.

Now, in 2024, they're back—big, bolder, and redesigned for a new generation. Today's oversized sunglasses—unlike the fashionable bug-eyed models worn in the 2000s—come in various shapes. Square and hexagonal shapes stand out as the most popular designs this year, with luxury brands like Cartier and Robert La Roche retailing a number of new designs in unconventional shapes.

Athleisure Eyewear: The New Gen Z Take on a Cult Classic

Futuristic wraparound sunglasses tried to have their moment in the late '90s, but they never quite reached the heights of other popular styles of the era; namely the tiny frames and brightly coloured frames and lenses. Now, brands like Balenciaga and Dior are reimagining the sports sunglasses for a new generation of fashionistas.

Blending style and functionality, the new wraparound shades are often designed with advanced features such as photochromic lenses, which adapt to changing light conditions indoors and outdoors. A step forward in both style and function, compared to their late '90s predecessor, the athleisure sunglasses are expected to stay on-trend throughout the year, thanks in part to the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Barbie Effect: Candy-Tinted Lenses Reimagined for 2024

Barbiecore aesthetic—which embraces the doll's trademark bright pink hues and over-the-top looks—took the world by storm even before the movie's official release. And it doesn't look like the world is ready to say ‘Bye Barbie’ just yet. From Red Carpet outfits sported by celebs like Anne Hathaway and Zendaya to accessories popularized by TikTok influencers, like handbags, jewellery, and yes—sunglasses, the Barbiecore aesthetic has seeped into all aspects of fashion and personal expression.

Candy-tinted lenses—in shades of fuchsia, pink, and lilac—were already sported by celebs such as Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, with styles ranging from aviator to oversized. Brands like Givenchy and APERÇU have recently introduced new shades in unique colour variations.

Other popular styles for 2024 include the timeless thin-wired frames and high-tech luxury—3D-printed titanium frames which blend elegance, comfort, and cutting-edge technology.
