Brewing Beer For Change: Kosi Stobbs On Building Tru Colors A Brewhouse

Jun 18, 2021

Property Owl Group Of Companies owner and serial entrepreneur Kosi Stobbs uses his platform for good by teaming up with Tru Colors and building them a 50 bbl/day brewhouse.

Tru Colors Brewing Company is in the business of brewing change. They’re a brewery in Wilmington, North Carolina that hires active gang members from rival gangs, with a commitment to create unity and camaraderie through beer. Tru Colors Brewing Company is focused on ending the vicious cycle of violence in their streets and decreasing the number of gang-related deaths in their city. As the owner of Property Owl Group Of Companies, a company that acquired brewing equipment manufacturer Specific Mechanical Systems, Kosi Stobbs was drawn to the mission being executed. And he knew he had to be involved.

Kosi Stobbs is the owner of Property Owl Group Of Companies, a company that buys mid-sized businesses to transform them into legacy leavers. After purchasing Specific Mechanical Systems, he knew that a focus on helping local communities through local brewing would be top priority.

So that's exactly what he's done, and Tru Colors Brewing Company is the latest to reap those benefits.

Specific Mechanical Systems builds handcrafted, reliable brewing systems for brewing operations around the world. Their brewhouse production systems typically range from 5-100 barrels, but when Tru Colors Brewing Company reached out for a brewhouse, serial entrepreneur Kosi Stobbs knew they needed something extraordinary.

The headquarters of Tru Colors Brewing Company is now home to a 50 bbl/day brewhouse from Specific Mechanical Systems — and the Wilmington-based brewery has the capacity to brew the change their Founder George Taylor intended.

The idea of Tru Colors Brewing Company first developed out of desperation for change in the streets of Wilmington. On a day in 2015, Taylor was in his office when a 16-year old boy was killed a few blocks away in a gang-related shooting. He spent the next two years with the different gangs of his community, building trust with them, while also trying to understand what could possibly bring them together. That’s when Tru Colors came in.

"The brewing equipment from Specific Mechanical Systems has been installed in Wilmington and beer is expected to be available in late June," Kosi Stobbs notes.

Of Tru Color's 65 employees, about 50 of them are local gang members from the Wilmington area. Their new headquarters, located on Greenfield Street, will have a fully operational brewhouse and brewery, a recording studio, office space, a gym, and even a daycare. With their 50 bbl/day brewhouse from Specific Mechanical Systems, Tru Colors Brewing Company has a goal to grow into a national brand within the next two years. And from the looks of it, with Kosi Stobbs' and Specific Mechanical's help, they have the passion (and the equipment) to do just that.

Both Kosi Stobbs and Tru Colors Brewing Company believe that diverse experiences, well-rounded perspectives, hard work, collaboration, and opportunity can blend together to create communities (and breweries) that prosper.

Tru Colors Brewing Company’s mission statement is “brewing peace through prosperity,” and they’re using beer to unite communities across America. By challenging stereotypes and seeing the potential in all people, they believe that honest conversations can happen over an ice cold beer.

And Kosi Stobbs believe them same.
