UK Black Owned Inclusive Beauty Brand Bare Faced Skin wins Silver in Day Moisturiser Category – Beauty Bible Awards 2021

As a black owned beauty brand founder I was ecstatic when Bare Faced Skin scooped a silver award for the Day Moisturiser Category in the Beauty Bible Awards 2021, a year which saw the highest number of entries in Beauty Bible's 25 year history.

People readily write off the indie beauty with comments that the “organic” or “natural” beauty products are unable to stand up against conventional beauty brands or provide the same high-performance results. The rise in beauty awards proves the script needs to change. Beauty awards give smaller indie brands the opportunity to showcase their products against stalwarts in the beauty industry. Products matched to testers with prevalent skin conditions who trial products over months for performance and capability. The proof is always in the pudding and Bare Faced Skin was pitted against some industry giants and picked up a silver award.

Details about the award can be found on the company website at: https://www.beautybible.com/day-moisturiser-2021

The award signifies the culmination of all the hard work put into providing the best products and results for our customers. Without our supporters Bare Faced Skin would not exist, so in part this award is also for them.

Bare Faced Skins product range was formulated for mature skins experiencing difficulties managing skin conditions, hormonal issues, and sensitivity. The products provide skincare solutions helping to reduce the frustration that is often associated with skin issues, increasing skin confidence to those who feel eliminated from the beauty landscape. There are many women in an ageing demographic who feel excluded from the picture or who feel like they are being paid lip service to, it's time for change.

I suffered with eczema, skin sensitivities and scarring for many years compounded by complications which resulted in hospitalisation. Skin conditions can become a constant battle, a physical and emotional rollercoaster that eats into your psyche. Anyone who has suffered with or who currently suffers with skin issues could divulge stories of anxiety, anger, frustration, worthlessness which often turn into despair and depression with the constant stress. Whether it is irritated, inflamed, dry, oily, sore or weeping skin the triggers are endless. Working out the triggers can take years of learning and experimentation. Throw in hormone issues into the mix and you have the perfect storm. Hormones are known to be triggers for some skin conditions, causing issues through puberty, during pregnancy and menopause.

I found supplementation in my diet of essential fatty acids and vitamins has been a great help. It is well known that deficiencies in our diets can have a profound effect on the body, dry skin, night blindness and stunted growth in vitamin A deficiency, rickets a vitamin D deficiency where incorrect mineralisation of bones occurs, scurvy caused by a lack of vitamin C resulting in bruising, bleeding, joint and muscle pain and vitamin E deficiency which results in nerve and muscle damage. So, it is not such a massive leap in thinking it is believed people with skin conditions could have deficiencies of essential fatty acids.

There are many fatty acids the body uses to function correctly, omegas 3, 6, and 9 you have probably heard of. Two are classed as essential fatty acids (EFA's) Omega 3 and 6, as the body is unable to or has limited capacity to produce these and they form components of every cell wall in the body. Omega 3 Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) can be sourced from plant oils like flaxseed and walnuts or green leafy vegetables and omega 6 Linoleic Acid (LA) from oils like rapeseed, sunflower and palm. Within the omega 6 family Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) found in borage oil, blackcurrant, and evening primrose oil is also necessary in production of prostaglandins which are integral to the body’s repair function.

Deficiency in ALA can manifest as rashes, eczema and dry skin. Omega 3 is thought to help reduce inflammation. A balanced diet with additional supplementation when required can help maintain skin health. Inflammation in the skin increases the potential for a compromised skin barrier function allowing invasion of external pathogens compounding skin issues. Our western diets tend to be full of processed food manufactured with palm, sunflower and vegetable fats higher in ratios of omega 6 (LA) to omega 3 (ALA). Reducing omega 6 and increasing omega 3 to ideal ratios of 4:1 would help balance the body and the potential to reduction inflammation.

There is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to skin conditions. Some issues improve through conventional medicine, others like myself prefer holistic whole body methods of emotional and physical well-being, diet and skincare.

Bare Faced Skin’s inclusive award-winning beauty products incorporate oils with both linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acid to help soothe skin inflammation and irritation, added antioxidants help combat free radial damage which causes the breakdown in collagen and elastin in the skin. Our nutrient rich formulas have been developed with the aim of supporting your skin barrier function, and providing the essentials your skin needs to function correctly, moisture, protection, and nourishment. Our products provide you with everyday skin confidence and mood boosting results, a solution that may help change the way you feel about your skin and find your calm.
