Health insurance in Arlington, Texas, will soon celebrate a decade under the Affordable Care Act. So why is it that the ACA’s biggest supporters are talking more about what it hasn’t been able to accomplish?

Arlington health insurance and the families who rely on it every day has benefited a ton from the Affordable Care Act, which was signed into existence in 2010 and will turn a decade old soon. Just a few of the positive changes include cutting the nation’s uninsured rate in half while also guaranteeing more generous coverage for millions of people, including countless people with preexisting conditions. On top of that, enrollment is holding steady, insurers are turning a profit, and the average cost of premiums is dropping. Essentially, the Affordable Care Act or ACA is a pretty good deal for a lot of Americans.

Ironically, blue-state lawmakers who are focusing too much on what the ACA didn’t fix. And these are the same men and women who championed the creation of the Affordable Care Act to begin with and continue to urge the state’s highest court to ignore petitions from red states who want to strike down the entire plan and start over with something better.

So why all the negativity from the ACA’s biggest cheerleaders? Rick Thornton, an Arlington Health Insurance Agent says it comes down to a few factors. For starters, there are still plenty of Americans who cannot afford health insurance in Arlington. This is a problem the ACA didn’t 100% solve. As one government official pointed out, the average American family spent $12,000 on healthcare last year, and one in five couldn’t afford to fill a prescription. Another factor that weighs heavily is that the quality of coverage has declined.

Despite all the talk about what the ACA didn’t fix, blue state lawmakers still feel everyone is better off and are fighting tooth and nail to keep the ACA off the chopping block. Recent petitions to the state’s highest court are asking to save the ACA and reinstate the individual mandate that was previously repealed.
