Brandon Anderson, Owner of Aardvark Automotive in Amarillo, Texas is issuing an important reminder to car owners in the Texas Panhandle. “It’s that time of year that car owners really need to ensure that their cars and trucks are as safe as possible. With cold weather coming, the potential for slippery roads increases, meaning your car’s braking system will be working overtime,” he says. According to Anderson, there are four specific reasons Texans should have their brakes inspected before the temperatures drop.

Cold Temperatures Can Lead to Coagulated Brake Fluid

When the temperatures dip, brake fluid can begin to coagulate, making it more viscous than it should be for optimal performance. Because of the vital role that brake (hydraulic) fluid plays in the mechanical operations of brake systems, thicker, compromised brake fluid will require that drivers press much harder on the brakes in order to stop and could potentially result in an inability to stop. “Before the holidays hit, it’s smart to have a top auto repair shop inspect your brakes,” Anderson says.

Dirt and Moisture Can Accumulate and Damage Rotors

Though Amarillo doesn’t get a lot of rain, when it does rain, the precipitation mixed with dirt from the road can get into the brake system. When the temperatures drop, the potential for that moisture and dirt to freeze, increases. Frozen debris in the brake system can cause damage to rotors, and weaken your braking power.

Erosion of Brake Pads Accelerates on Slick Roads

When roads get icy, more brake power is necessary to stop. The extra pressure drivers have to apply to the brake can wear down the brake pads faster than during warmer weather. “A full brake inspection prior to the winter weather will let you know if you need new brake pads before the roads get slick,” said Anderson.

Well Maintained Brakes Are Necessary for Slippery Conditions

An optimal braking system is important during the weather. After all, you’re not only responsible for stopping your car on wet or slick roads, you also need to be alert to other drivers whose brake systems aren’t in good working order. “To keep yourself and your family safe this winter, a full-service brake inspection and service is advisable,” Anderson explains.
