Dallas health insurance provider will offer prescription drug rebates to customers when they fill prescriptions. Experts believe savings will assist consumers manage their health care decisions.

Dallas health insurance consumers may begin to receive a pleasant monetary discount from their health provider for prescription drugs. UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest insurance companies operating in Dallas, TX, has announced that it will allow consumers covered by certain employer-sponsored health plans to collect rebates when they fill prescriptions or at the point of sale.

Depending on the prescription drug, consumers may experience savings of up to several hundred dollars. Health care experts expect the pass-through to ultimately lower customer expenses such as deductibles or co-insurance payments. As prescription drugs have steadily risen, many consumers of health insurance in Dallas have not been able to fill all of their prescriptions given the cost-prohibitive costs. This new program would be a welcome relief particularly for those who take prescriptions for chronic diseases.

Drugmakers have come under fire recently for raising drug prices to extremely high levels. Rebates have been offered but typically they are used by insurance providers and employers. Also, health insurance plans are increasingly being organized to transfer a larger financial responsibility for those most using the high-cost prescription drugs. More forward-thinking organizations are using the money to reduce overall plan costs according to the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute.

There has been some push-back from many health insurance advocates with regard to point-of-sale rebates. Because of the original high price set by drug manufacturers, they argue it provides only a small nominal difference in reducing plan costs. The rebates also leave out a large group of individuals who do not receive fully-insured coverage through their employer.

Rick Thornton, owner of Insurance4Dallas,a leader of Dallas health insurance brokers, believes rebates can ultimately be beneficial to customers. “Anytime customers can get some relief from paying for expensive prescription drugs, it is helpful. And when there are more healthy people in the pool, plan costs go down for everyone.”
