The trailers for Disney’s film Zootopia have largely marketed it as a fun, sweet children’s film.
However, the film is much more complex than it seems from the trailers, and not only because it is an animated film. It takes a little while to get to the deeper points, but the reward is absolutely worth it.
What the film is really about is how society functions in a period of fear and how the powerful can exploit that fear.
A viewer review reads: “Zootopia is the most un-childish, adult-oriented talking animal movie of all time and I just can’t get enough of its blissful movie viewing experience. The movie is so grown ups to the point that it’s not just about simply delivering a touchy feely messages to children and kids alike, it’s more about whether we truly understand or want to follow those messages on certain degree.”
The themes and messages are extremely relevant to today’s world and easy for people of all ages, not just children, to recognize and appreciate. There are still topics for anyone too young to fully understand, but there are also enough to entertain and get adults to take a step back and think about the deeper meaning.
The film came out at a time when discussions about race and diversity were reaching their peak, and its subject matter remains highly debatable to this day. The directors have opted for jokes based on stereotypes, but some scenes really stand out because the film is about overcoming prejudice.
Here are some of our favorite jokes from and about the movie.
