According to Strava, the social network for athletes, most people give up by January 12. So if has made it this far, that's good. And it is time to stand strong and keep forming new healthier habits. It is time to resist the temptation to take the easy way out and slide back into old, familiar patterns.

When it comes to good health, most health experts agree on two things. One is the need to detoxify the body. The other is the need to nourish the body.

Sugar is considered to be bad for health. That is why so many health regimes have people cut out sweets, puddings, candy bars, cookies, sugary snacks, cakes, pies, sugary drinks, colas, and simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are those which are easily turned into glucose or sugar in the blood stream.

Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain breads that contain fiber, slow down the process of carbohydrates being converted into sugar. Nevertheless, it is still possible to get too much of a good thing, so complex carbohydrates must be eaten in moderation.

Refined cereals are another thing to avoid. Cereals like whole grain granola with nuts are better.

Bottled fruit juice would also come under the category of too much sugar since it shoots blood sugar up so quickly. Fruit juice that is freshly squeezed or made in a juicer is better as it contains some fiber.

Alkaline foods are better for the body. Much of the standard American diet (SAD) is acidic. This is caused by sugar, condiments, alcohol, meat and processed foods.

One way to alkalize the body is to drink raw juices. This helps normalize the body. Excess acidity is usually involved in sickness.

One thing to realize is that the way food is processed is important. Raw is better than steamed because the enzymes are kept intact. Steamed is better than boiled because boiling leaches out minerals and vitamins into the cooking water.

Besides eating correctly, there are other elements to a healthy lifestyle. Moderate exercise, proper sleep, pure water, and fresh air are important. Drinking coffee, cokes, and fruit juice does not substitute for pure water.

Raw nuts are a good food. They have protein, fiber, antioxidants, monounsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals. This applies to the raw, unprocessed nuts. Once nuts are fried, salted, or dipped into chocolate, or processed some other way, they do not have as many health benefits.

What about dairy? People lose the enzymes to properly digest dairy as they grow older. Mother’s milk or goat’s milk is good for babies. However, milk is not a universally beneficial food as people grow older.

There is a difference in how people respond to foods according to their blood types. It pays to know the body’s blood type is and eat accordingly.

By following these tips and continuing tweak a new health regime, a person will find that once the regime is tweaked properly, there is no real desire to go back to the unhealthy way of life since the new habits and lifestyle are so beneficial.
